Survivalist: Invisible Strain is an open-world colony building simulation set in a zombie apocalypse, often compared to State of Decay, Project Zomboid, Rimworld, Kenshi, or “The Sims but with zombies”. It’s also about people, relationships, and survival.
You can talk to anyone…
All living creatures in the world have a name and a personality. They remember your actions, and their memories affect their mood and perception of you. They have their own lives: gossiping, eating, sleeping, warming up, working, and fighting. Some will give you missions; it’s up to you whether you complete them or not. Use negotiation, friendship, violence, secrecy, or cunning to achieve your goals!
You can get anyone…
You can win other survivors by making them love you, respect you, or fear you. As you recruit followers, they will need a place to sleep, a steady source of food, a fire to keep them warm, and walls to keep enemies at bay. You’ll need to manage their morale and relationships; sometimes they’ll get upset or start fighting. Sometimes they’ll kiss and cuddle. Sometimes they’ll want to spend time with you, or talk to you.
You can chop down trees, mine stone, and find other resources in the abandoned towns around the map. Set traps for enemies, or rabbits. Hunt deer, raise chickens, grow crops, or resort to more desperate means if you’re really hungry! Assign members of your community as a Farmer, Chef, Archer, and so on.
You can be anyone…
When you start a new game, you can customize your character’s appearance, clothing, equipment, skills, and personality. There are different conversation options for people with different personalities.
You can fight anyone…
The game is a mix of Third Person Action and Real-Time Strategy. Hover directly over each character in the third person action view, or scroll to the top view to assign commands. You can target your enemies’ feet to slow them down, or try to hit their heads to deal more damage. You can dodge or block melee combat – and so can your enemies. Different characters have different abilities and can level up to improve their archery, shooting, or melee skills. Eating better food improves your constitution, increasing the chance that you’ll survive a losing battle.
You can kill anyone…
You can sneak up on enemies and kill them, or just knock them out cold and steal their belongings. Throw bottles or pieces of meat to distract zombies. Wear camouflaged clothing to improve your stealth. Animals and zombies have a good sense of smell, so be sure to pay attention to the wind direction!
You can command your community to attack enemies en masse, or have one person act as a lone assassin. Use melee weapons, bows and arrows, pistols and grenades. Fight dirty with infected weapons. Equip vehicles and run towards your enemies!
But you can’t trust just anyone!
There’s always the lurking threat of the Invisible Strain, a mysterious new strain of the zombie virus. Those who are infected seem normal as they enter your group and spread the virus, until one day they turn on you!
