Welcome to the first Tactical Extraction Robber Nightmare Frontier, where you put your courage and leadership into holes in fears that manifest as flesh and blood monsters. It all starts with a newspaper ad, promising a new gold rush – a ruined city full of treasures, available for free. Behind the ad is Doc, a snake oil master with the vision to control the Dreambath and use it to power a new future. Region by region, the story explains exactly what Doc is building and what the hell is going on here in Nightmare Frontier.
Each Corpse Robber rescued in an attack takes one of the 16 Fears. Each horror attracts its own Dreadweaver – that’s what the locals call these Horrors incarnate – from spiders with six bullets each to creepy dolls that come at you with scissors. Choosing who joins the next attack determines what monsters and dangers the crew will face, and what resources will be harvested from the dead.
The shooting is turn-based, brutal and absolutely deterministic: no dice, no chances of hitting. Each fight unfolds like a puzzle on a battlefield full of practicalities and dangers. Repel a shot into a milk jug, throw meat into a burning oven, shoot another into your partner’s line of fire, then chain your kills to continue the rotation. The difference between losing your entire crew and eliminating the hood in one go depends on how you read the battlefield: it’s a standalone weapon, if you’re smart enough to mount it.
Experience the genre-defining combination of turn-based tactical combat and the high-risk-high-reward gameplay loop of Extraction Shooters. The City Districts are endless, randomly generated, and filled with both danger and opportunity – map nodes lead to battles, useful facilities, anomalous queues, and quests. Going deeper increases the Nightmare Level, making battles more difficult, but the loot is more valuable. Backpack space is limited and entering battle means losing everything – decide when to push your luck and venture further afield for better loot, and when to return to the Hideout with what you have. A coward rarely pays the bills, but you can’t enjoy your benefits when you die in Nightmare Frontier.
Drag the controls – weapons, equipment, Nightmare Essence, and monster pieces – back to the Hideout, the only corner of the City that is not Nightmare-proof. Combine harvested eyes, teeth and spikes with ordinary junk and hasty thoughts to improve your crazy tools in Nightmare Frontier. Expand the four open trees in the Compositions, come up with your crew’s fighting style and appearance – and unlock new ways to send the monsters back to the hells they came from.
Between raids, the Hideout is yours to run. Update the roster, upgrade equipment, unlock new Compositions and build the deck for the next Raid: the right equipment against the right predator is the difference between payday and mourning in Nightmare Frontier.
